Chapter 1
UNDERSTANDING PREDICTIVE
MAINTENANCE
1.1 What is Predictive Maintenance?
In order to forecast equipment breakdowns and maximize
maintenance efforts, predictive maintenance is a proactive
maintenance approach that makes use of cutting-edge
technology and data analysis techniques. Real-time equipment
status monitoring, historical data analysis, and algorithmic
pattern recognition are all part of this process. Organizations can
plan maintenance work, minimize unplanned downtime, and cut
costs associated with reactive maintenance by spotting possible
problems before they arise.
1.2 The Need for Predictive Maintenance
The conventional methods of maintenance, such as reactive
(repairing faulty equipment) and preventative (scheduling
maintenance regardless of the condition of the equipment),
have drawbacks. Preventive maintenance may result in
excessive maintenance operations or missing crucial failures,
whereas reactive maintenance may cause unanticipated
downtime and expensive repairs. Predictive maintenance helps
firms take a proactive approach, reduce downtime, make the
most of their resources, and improve overall equipment
effectiveness.
